Tough task for Alonso with Alexander Arnold!

As Real Madrid prepares to officially announce the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Spanish newspaper AS has shed light on the deal, highlighting both the player's great qualities and some potential challenges.

Alexander-Arnold is considered one of the top playmakers in the Premier League, ranking second only to Kevin De Bruyne in terms of assists. He stands out for his exceptional vision and passing accuracy, as well as his threat from crosses and set-pieces. He is also capable of building attacks from wide areas or cutting inside, which enabled him to form a strong attacking partnership with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.

However, the newspaper also raised concerns about his defensive performance. He struggles with positioning and tracking back, which requires constant support from his teammates. Statistics show his success rate in duels is just 47%, making him a less reliable defensive option—especially in Xabi Alonso’s expected 3-4-2-1 system, which relies on balance between attack and defense.

Alonso may face a dilemma in how to deploy Alexander-Arnold unless he is used in a more central role, similar to Alejandro Grimaldo, to benefit from his passing without exposing the team defensively. Additionally, his lack of effective pressing may be a drawback in a system that emphasizes quick ball recovery.

Last season, Alexander-Arnold recorded 88 tackles and 61 passes per match, highlighting his influence in build-up play. However, this impact appears less decisive compared to his peak under Jürgen Klopp, especially following his occasional stint in central midfield.

Real Madrid's management is weighing the creative attacking output the player offers against the defensive risks that could prove costly in big matches. With Luka Modrić nearing his departure, the Englishman may be seen as an alternative in building play from the back.

Ultimately, Alexander-Arnold’s success at Santiago Bernabéu will largely depend on Xabi Alonso’s ability to maximize his strengths and create a system that covers his weaknesses—potentially making him a valuable addition to the club’s new project.
